out of oblo - June 2024
A new project and a toolkit focused on AI, speaking in Berlin and Barcelona, and reflections on writing and conversational design.
Dear oblo friends,
we are officially kicking off our studio newsletter. If you are reading this or just subscribed, we probably already know each other: how are you? If not: we are oblo, a team of designers and innovation experts based in Milan, working worldwide to support organisations in their transformative journeys.
In both cases: thanks for being here.
In our studio, we are used to holding a stand-up meeting on Monday mornings to catch up on projects and share inspiring things. We would love to replicate this format with you as a way to kick off the month together. We are going to publish this newsletter on the first Monday of every month, with a wrap-up of our studio life from the previous weeks, and some inspirations and insights.
Here’s our June wrap-up, enjoy!
We launched the first part of our AI Kit
Maybe you have heard about AI, GenAI, and how it could disrupt the future of products and services. And maybe, beyond all the buzzing, you are facing the challenge of finding relevant business cases for your company or your clients.
At the beginning of June we launched the first part of our AI Kit, with the AI Opportunity Landscape canvas, designed to support organisations in identifying opportunities to enhance their front and/or back-end service offerings with AI, and have an overview of potential impacts.
In the past 3 weeks it has been downloaded across every continent (hello friends from New Zealand!) and by hundreds of professionals.
In case you missed it, here’s a video introduction by Yulya Besplemennova. The kit has also been featured in the last edition of SDN Touchpoint “Service Design at the dawn of AI”, one of the most renowned publication on service design.
We have been in Modena to kick-off a new exciting project
On June 6th we started a new project with Doctors without borders (MSF) and Ammagamma, with the goal of building an AI-tool that could boost MSF operations.
We are more than proud to start a new chapter of our collaboration with MSF (after 3 years of collaboration) and Ammagamma (which is one of the leading Italian companies in the AI field).
The concept we are working on comes from a previous phase of research and strategy conducted last year. Now we are starting to work on the design of the first full-functioning MVP, joining forces with business owners and data scientists.
Roberta Tassi spoke about service design operations at SDD Berlin
What does it mean for an organisation to integrate service design methodologies in their operations? How to get started and how to scale-up the approach over time?
In our experience we've seen two different approaches, from organisations adopting service design to improve the quality of the product or service they offer to organisations adopting service design to adjust internal processes.
Roberta shared examples inspired by our work with Opyn and Medici Senza Frontiere, and learnings that could inspire other organisations shaping their own strategy. The event was hosted at Delivery Hero, and welcomed a broad and active community of service designers in Berlin.
Serena Talento will share her work on how visual sense-making can support supply chain innovation at 2CO conference
The talk will explore how service design methodologies and visual sense-making can contribute in dealing with the complexity of supply chain, from understanding and including the human factor, engaging stakeholders, to making information accessible, and supporting decision making.
The research is based on projects we worked on, like mapping the pharmaceutical supply chain for the Zambia Ministry of Health.
We have been reflecting on the role of language, writing and conversational design in our everyday practice.
Alessandra Del Nero recently shared some interesting references and insights with the team about how our search methods and mental models have changed, and the impact of Google search box on the meaning of information. She also shared reflections on language and conversational design from Erika Hall’s book Conversational Design. Meanwhile, Chiara Albanesi published an article about the impact of writing on the design process, featured on UX Collective.
We decided it was the right time to share some thoughts and discuss them publicly. We are launching a new edition of Service Design Meets (the meet up we organise and host in our studio) dedicated to UX writing and written experiences. It will be on July 11th, so stay tuned for news on our LinkedIn page.
Curious about past editions of #ServiceDesignMeets? You can check them on our YouTube channel.
Thanks for reading our monthly update.
Anything you want to discuss with us? You can book a 30 min call or drop us a line.
Enjoy July,
Chiara and oblo team
